Conversion and addition of a ten-storey glass extension to the rear of a Grade II listed office building.

We were commissioned in June 2003 to extend an existing Grade II listed warehouse on Blackfriars Street in Salford, adjacent to the River Irwell and within sight of Deansgate. The existing building is a multi-tenanted office over four storeys and a basement with a yard and car park to the rear. It is surrounded by a large residential development known as the Edge, and located in the Flat Iron conservation area and Chapel Street regeneration area.

We designed a new extension, using the rear yard and linking this to the existing building. The existing building is to be stripped back to its original structure and a new mezzanine inserted. The extension is to be a modern, ten-storey glass and panel design topped by a glass pavilion. The scheme will provide 65,000sqft of office space with a restaurant at ground level and two basement levels of car parking.

The proposals were granted planning approval and listed building consent in August 2006.
